Canada School Shooting Tragedy

A suspected gunman killed nine people at a small-town high school in British Columbia before taking his own life, with dozens more injured.

Authorities in Canada report that 10 individuals, including the suspected shooter, were killed following a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School; six were found dead within the building, one died while being transported to the hospital, and two more victims were found dead at a nearby residence thought to be connected to the incident. The suspected shooter, who also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was found inside the school.

More than two dozen individuals have been reported as injured in connection with this incident; 27 people are reported injured, including two with serious or life-threatening injuries who were airlifted to higher-acuity medical facilities. The remaining injured individuals will be receiving medical treatment in their local community, and it is believed that there are no other outstanding suspects and the community is safe.

Officers received the first report of an active shooter at the secondary school around 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday, triggering an emergency alert asking residents to shelter in place. That alert was later cancelled after the scene was secured.

Tumbler Ridge, a community of roughly 2,400 people nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, is served by the Peace River South School District, and the secondary school has about 175 students. Police have not released the identities or ages of the victims, nor have they confirmed a motive.

British Columbia’s premier called the attack an “unimaginable tragedy,” and national leaders expressed sorrow. Support services are being mobilized to help families and first responders cope with the aftermath.
