Rushanara Ali, a Labour MP, has come under fire for allegedly being hypocritical after evicting tenants and increasing rent on her East London property.
There have been reports of a government homelessness minister evicting four residents of a townhouse in East London and then raising the rent by hundreds of pounds. The rent for the four-bedroom apartment was reportedly increased from £3,300 to £4,000 by Rushanara Ali, 50, after the previous tenants were evicted. According to reports, the residents of the house, which is close to Olympic Park, were only given four months' notice to go in November.
According to press reports, the home was relisted a few weeks after they had moved out, with a rent increase of £700 per month. The tenants were given a rolling contract and told that their fixed-term rental would not be extended while the house was on the market, but they chose to leave, a source close to the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Stepney told the newspaper. When no buyer was found, the home was put back on the rental market for hundreds more than the prior rate.
Ms. Ali has already denounced the exploitation of private tenants. Additionally, she stated that the Labour administration will provide citizens with the ability to contest exorbitant rent rises.
The forthcoming Renters' Rights Bill from the government would prohibit landlords who have terminated a tenancy to sell a home from relisting it with a higher rent until at least six months after the residents have departed.
Laura Jackson, a previous renter of the east London house, told The i paper that it's a complete farce. It is extortion to try to get so much money from tenants. Additionally, leasing companies informed the residents that the cost of having the house properly cleaned and repainted would be £2,400.
