The closures of Style Group and Amplus Limited have prompted the Jersey Chamber of Commerce to issue a warning about potential economic effects.
Jersey's business leaders have warned of economic shockwaves following the closure of two construction enterprises. After Style Group halted operations and Amplus Limited announced its closure on Monday, the Jersey Chamber of Commerce (JCC) stated it was heartbreaking for the employees' families.
Founded in 1999, Amplus announced on its website that it was time to "hang up their hard hats" and shut down, though no reason for the closure was provided. The BBC does not know why Style was shut down. The JCC expressed fear that if additional businesses fail, the island won't be able to provide homes, schools, and other necessary initiatives.
Murray Norton, CEO of the JCC, stated that because the government is the biggest buyer of building and construction services, the Chamber has been pushing for the approval and launch of capital projects. They fear that more closures in this industry will be unavoidable and that Jersey's economy will lose qualified tradespeople if there are no major projects available for local construction businesses to bid on.
A wide range of investments is required, including those in housing, infrastructure, maintenance, and enhancement. It has to be theirs. Several secondary firms will be impacted by unpaid payments or cancelled work as a result of the recent closures of well-established businesses, the chamber noted in its statement. The JCC cautioned that relying more on contractors from outside the island could lead to job losses locally and higher expenses.
