Canada’s cybersecurity agency links recent telecom breaches to the Chinese state-sponsored group Salt Typhoon, urging urgent defensive measures amid rising cyber risks.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, Canada's cybersecurity agency, has warned that a recent attack that penetrated the nation's telecommunications infrastructure was probably carried out by hackers with Chinese support. Three network devices belonging to a Canadian corporation were affected in these attacks, the agency stated.
The US FBI and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security jointly released a bulletin this week urging Canadian organizations to strengthen their networks against the threat posed by Salt Typhoon, a hacker collective known to have connections to the Chinese government. The warning emphasizes the ongoing risk and the pressing need to protect critical infrastructure.
The Cyber Center is now keeping an eye on malicious cyber activity targeting Canadian telecom companies. According to Bloomberg, the agency stated that the culpable actors are most likely state-sponsored actors from the People's Republic of China, specifically Salt Typhoon.
The bureau added that independent studies that revealed commonalities with Salt Typhoon-related data suggest the cyber assault is not limited to the telecom industry. Over the next two years, the hackers will most likely keep trying to get inside Canadian companies, especially telecom providers, the agency said in the study.
China has continuously denied US allegations that it is associated with Salt Typhoon, an organization that was initially mentioned by The Wall Street Journal last year. In January, the United States imposed sanctions on China's Ministry of State Security and a Chinese company for allegedly being directly involved in the cyberattacks.
