SAP and Climeworks have signed a multi-million-euro agreement to transform enterprise decarbonization using cutting-edge technology and creative carbon removal.
In order to further business decarbonization, the two technology leaders have reached a multi-million-euro partnership that uses strategic investment and technical innovation to obtain 37,000 tons of various high-quality carbon removal credits.
Sophia Mendelsohn, SAP's Chief Sustainability & Commercial Officer, says investing in high-quality carbon removals addresses emissions that cannot be totally eliminated. That their cooperation with Climeworks protects against price volatility while securing high-integrity capacity at preferred prices. SAP benefits economically from this investment as well since it allows them to create new solutions that satisfy changing partner, client, and regulatory requirements.
As per the arrangement, SAP will purchase 37,000 tons of premium carbon removal credits from Climeworks, which will be supplied until 2034. This portfolio, which combines increased rock weathering, biochar, and Direct Air Capture (DAC), is specially designed for SAP's business processes. In addition to reducing its own residual emissions, SAP is enhancing its resilience against climate-related risks and price volatility in the carbon market by diversifying its carbon removal techniques.
As part of the partnership, Climeworks has adopted SAP's enterprise technologies, including SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud and SAP LeanIX, through the GROW with SAP initiative. This action gives Climeworks a future-proof, scalable platform to optimize financial management, enforce compliance, and streamline operations—all of which are essential for growing in the ever-changing carbon removal industry.
According to Christoph Gebald, co-founder and co-CEO of Climeworks, putting SAP into practice was the appropriate move. It permits real-time financial data administration, guarantees compliance, and supports their emphasis on profitability.
To support its aggressive growth trajectory, Climeworks plans to use SAP's sustainability-focused products—like the SAP Sustainability Control Tower—much more frequently. Partnerships like this one provide a scalable, practical route—converting climate risk into economic resilience and opportunity—as pressure on companies to fulfill science-based net zero objectives increases.
