Paul Copplestone, the CEO of Supabase, an open-source database firm located in New Zealand, could not have predicted in 2020 that the company would be in a prime position to capitalize on vibe coding, the most important trend of 2025.
When it revealed a $200 million Series D fundraising round led by Accel on Tuesday, the impact of this became evident, and the company was valued at $2 billion following the investment.
According to Fortune, this fundraising round included participation from Coatue, Y Combinator, Craft Ventures, and longtime backer Felicis.
Just seven months ago, Supabase said that it had secured $80 million, mostly with the support of Sequoia subsidiary Peak XV and David Sacks' Craft Ventures. That news is followed by this fresh $200 million investment. Although Supabase did not disclose the valuation at the time, PitchBook calculated that it was around $900 million. The business has raised more than $398 million so far. Another illustration of how successful open-source initiatives can be is Supabase. In addition to hosting the apps, it provides an open-source substitute for Firebase, Google's AI app development database, with monthly rates for enterprise clients beginning at $600 or higher.
For capabilities like file storage for automatically produced APIs, authentication, and a vector toolkit—which is essential for many AI applications—Supabase integrates the open-source SQL database Postgres with a number of enterprise-grade open-source technologies. Like vibe database administration, it basically simplifies the intricate procedures needed to set up a SQL database for app development. As a result, it has gained popularity as a backend support option for feel coding tools like the quickly expanding Lovable.
Copplestone previously told TechCrunch that Y Combinator alumni Supabase has emerged as a top choice for YC startups.
But it's also starting to do well with both corporate and independent developers.
Speaking to TechCrunch, managing partner Aydin Senkut said Felicis has expanded dramatically, especially in the past two years.
It’s most important resource is its growing developer community, which has grown by hundreds every day to over a million members. Indeed, Supabase already has more than 81,000 reviews on GitHub and more than 1.7 million developers.
