Africa’s Healthcare at Risk Amid Critical Nursing Fund Crisis

The objectives of nurses and other health professionals in Africa are hampered by austerity measures placed on debt-ridden nations and the low amount of public support for healthcare, according to the African Nurses and Midwives Confederation's inaugural convention.

The conference, which had as its topic "African Nurses and Midwives Fostering Health for All," offered an essential forum for discussion, cooperation, and advocacy in order to advance healthcare systems throughout the continent. Representatives from 17 African nations attended the conference, including Public Services International (PSI) affiliates including the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, and Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa (DENOSA).

Together, they considered the dedication of nurses and midwives to promoting universal access to quality healthcare. The call to action was more than simply a topic; it emphasized the critical role that nurses and midwives play as the foundation of African healthcare systems.

African nurses and midwives are united as the inaugural ANMC conference ushers in a new era of collective action. This solidarity encourages the audience to join this larger movement for change and strengthens them in their endeavor to promote health for everyone.

PSI Regional Secretary for Africa and the Arab Region, Brother Daniel Oberko, spoke to the group and emphasized the critical role that nurses and midwives play in maintaining strong health systems. In order to promote decent employment, stronger nurses' unions, and more robust health systems throughout the continent, he called on the Nursing and Midwifery Trade Unions to engage with PSI.
