Greenland Officials Outraged by Trump’s Delegation Plan

As Greenland's prime minister criticizes a high-profile U.S. visit and charges the Trump administration of ignoring Greenlandic sovereignty, tensions increase.

Tensions between the U.S. and Greenland increased on Sunday as the Greenland’s Prime Minister criticized a high-ranking delegation from the Trump administration visiting the island this week. Among them are Usha Vance, the second lady, and national security adviser Michael Waltz, following President Trump's comments about possibly incorporating Greenland into the U.S. Ms. Vance is set for cultural activities starting Thursday, while Mr. Waltz plans to arrive earlier with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

Prime Minister Mute B. Egede expressed his frustration in statements published in a Greenlandic newspaper, indicating that the diplomatic efforts of Greenlanders seem to be overlooked by Trump and his administration, which appear focused on asserting control over Greenland. He specifically raised concerns about Mr. Waltz’s presence, suggesting it was merely an act of authority. He cautioned that by bolstering American backing for Trump's agenda, Mr. Waltz's involvement would increase pressure on Greenland. Other officials from Greenland pointed out that a new government had not been established yet and that the island had recently conducted legislative elections, which raised worries about the timing of the visit.

The head of the main political party, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stressed that the Americans' knowledge of the ongoing discussions shows a serious lack of regard for the Greenlandic people. According to a new study, most Greenlanders do not want to join the United States, despite the fact that many still expect for better ties with Washington, as discontent with Trump's plans rises. Officials in Greenland had, until recently, carefully negotiated their sovereignty while trying to avoid upsetting the Trump administration.

The Trump administration has framed the visit as a cordial engagement, revealing in a Sunday statement that Ms. Vance will be accompanied by one of her children as they travel on Thursday to attend Greenland’s national dog-sled race, Avannaata Qimussersu, returning to the U.S. on Saturday. The statement emphasized that Ms. Vance and her delegation are looking forward to experiencing this important race and celebrating the culture and unity of Greenland.
