Oracle Wins Deal to Provide AI Cloud Services for Singapore Defense

Oracle will supply Singapore’s defense technology agency with an air-gapped cloud system, enhancing military data security and AI-driven surveillance in Southeast Asia.

Oracle has completed a deal with Singapore's defense technology agency for the provision of secure cloud and AI services, marking its first such deal in Southeast Asia. The company will be establishing an "air-gapped" cloud infrastructure, which means an isolated system not connected to the internet and only interfaced with classified networks through encrypted devices, to defend sensitive military data against the increasing regional cyber threats.

Rand Waldron, Oracle's global chief technology officer for defense, stated that the system will enhance data analysis and imagery processing by integrating AI capabilities. Additionally, it will have analytical engines that can scan video streams for characteristics like faces, license plates, and vehicle information, enhancing total surveillance and monitoring capabilities.

No financial terms of the contract were disclosed to the public. There is an increasing Oracle footprint in Southeast Asia. In October 2023, the company declared that it would invest more than USD 6.5 billion to open a new cloud area in Malaysia.

Oracle's air-gap cloud is expected to increase defence data security of Singapore and further provide the country with AI-based intelligence capabilities as the cyber threats against Southeast Asian governments are raising. This arrangement further boosts Oracle's position as a major provider in the area of secure cloud solutions for government and defense operations around the globe.
