NHAI Unveils Plan to Enhance Construction Quality Oversight

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a tiered quality control method to enhance road-building standards following criticism of the poor condition of many national highways.

In place of the former procedure of obtaining "one-time source approval" from the headquarters, the Authority has suggested creating "Independent Regional Quality Offices" in each of the five zones. The NHAI's Standards, Research, Development & Quality division will oversee these new offices. A regional quality officer (RQC) will lead each office and be in charge of organizing and overseeing quality control issues in their particular areas.

Twice a year, the RQCs will use outside labs to randomly test items like bearings, expansion joints, and components at project sites under their control, as well as materials like steel, cement, and emulsion. A comprehensive standard operating procedure for factory inspections where supplies are procured, including the roles and duties of the RQCs, has been provided by NHAI in an effort to further streamline the process.

Officials claim that because of the notable acceleration of highway building over the last 10 years, the emphasis has now moved to guarantee construction quality and upkeep.

Concerns over the quality of buildings have been the subject of many recent meetings within the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, according to authorities. The government was recently criticized on social media for the poor condition of highways like as the Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor and the Delhi-Jaipur section. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, has also voiced his worries over the condition of road building and quality.
