Patriots loss, 24–21 Patriots

Despite having their best first half of the season, the Patriots lost 24–21 to the Bills in the second half due to turnovers and defensive issues.

At Highmark Stadium on Sunday, the New England Patriots' best half of the season ended in a 24–21 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The squad led by head coach Jerod Mayo came out strong, forcing Buffalo's first possession to be a punt and scoring on a short six-play, 44-yard opening drive. Early in the second quarter, the Patriots jumped ahead 14-0 thanks to a calculated 16-play touchdown drive.

Buffalo was a huge underdog going into the game, but New England shocked them by outgaining them 127 to 11 yards in the first quarter. The defense stood firm, the offense was aggressive, and even deceptive plays like a good fake punt kept the Bills at bay. The Patriots appeared to have turned the corner for a split second.

But Buffalo's nine-play surge to equalize the score in the second half changed the course of the match. The Bills then took advantage of two offensive blunders by the Patriots, including a reverse ball that Buffalo recovered for a touchdown, to score 24 points in a row. Patriots failed to keep possession, which utterly undid their early momentum.

There were some good lessons learned in spite of the defeat. In a hostile setting, the Patriots displayed a sense of urgency and resolve that had been absent earlier in the season. However, their lack of skill on the roster ultimately proved to be their undoing. The defense gave the Bills 6.3 yards per carry, while the offense failed to score for more than 40 minutes.

Patriots can be commended for keeping the game closer than anticipated, but they were still outplayed by a playoff-caliber squad over the course of four quarters. The Patriots have a lot of work to do in the offseason after their 12th loss of the season.
