The Phoenix Suns' 117-90 loss to the Nuggets drops them to 14-14, revealing serious defensive shortcomings and casting doubt on the team's prospects for the season.
With their 2024–25 seasons on the line following yet another disappointing showing, the Phoenix Suns are skating on thin ice. The Suns' crushing 117-90 defeat to the Denver Nuggets on Monday put them at 14-14 and raised questions about their defense, personnel, and general strategy.
The Suns were without Devin Booker (left groin strain) and Grayson Allen (concussion protocol) against a Nuggets squad that had just finished an overtime game the previous evening. Even though they missed a lot of games, Phoenix's performance was still much below par.
In just three quarters, Denver reached the century mark, highlighting the Suns' obvious defensive shortcomings. Phoenix put up effort in their early defensive plays, but as plays progressed, their rotations, rebounding, and transition defense all failed. Denver made easy baskets as a result, and the Suns felt powerless.
The tone was established in the first quarter when the Suns lost Nikola Jokic in the paint and were unable to stop the 50% 3-point shooter. The problems were exacerbated by careless rotations and the loss of needless offensive rebounds.
Phoenix had a fantastic chance to take advantage of Denver's vulnerability when Jokic was on vacation, as the Nuggets' offensive rating fell precipitously in his absence. However, the Suns didn't seem to be able to capitalize, thus Denver's bench was able to increase the advantage.
The Suns fell apart in the third quarter even though they were just four points down at the half. Phoenix's fate was sealed by Denver's rapid 9-2 run, which included failed defensive assignments and Kevin Durant's errors. Despite scoring 17 points in the first half, Michael Porter Jr. was mysteriously left open at the 3-point line during transition.
The Suns are currently at a turning point. A possible squad makeover is probable due to defensive lapses, subpar offensive play, and a lack of unity on both ends. Phoenix's season can end before the playoffs start if they don't make a quick turnaround.
