Along with entertaining moments with Martin Short and Keenan Thompson, Hozier closes out SNL's holiday episode with a chart-topping hit and a unique Pogues cover.
On December 21, Hozier performed his smash song "Too Sweet" and a joyous rendition of The Pogues' Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York" to round out the Saturday Night Live season. In an unforgettable performance, the Irish singer-songwriter debuted his most recent chart-topper on the show hosted by Martin Short.
Short brought up Hozier's 2024 blockbuster song, "Too Sweet," which was released ten years after his breakthrough record, "Take Me to Church," which he sang during his 2014 SNL debut. Earlier this year, "Too Sweet" shot to the top of the Pop Airplay and Rock & Alternative Airplay charts in addition to the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, it reached No. 10 on the year-end Billboard Hot 100 list.
An energetic rendition of The Pogues' 1987 hit song "Fairytale of New York" was played by Hozier and his band later in the performance. The song, which began as a duet between Kirsty MacColl and Shane MacGowan, has grown to become a well-known Christmas classic. Sadly, MacColl sadly perished in a boating accident in 2000, and MacGowan went away last year.
During his performance, Hozier made a lighthearted reference to the original song by substituting the line "You're cheap and you're haggard" with a contentious insult.
Behind-the-scenes interviews with Hozier, Martin Short, and Keenan Thompson were also included in this holiday-themed Saturday Night Live show. Short made amusing complaints about the script and the décor during rehearsals. Hozier immediately adopted Short's joke about commemorating the ancient Roman holiday Saturnalia, referring to himself as a "fellow Saturnite," in another clip. Short responded that he preferred Saturnalia and that Christmas was only "Wednesday" when Thompson asked him whether he appreciated the holiday.
