Explore the amazing tale of Luna Luna, the first art fair in history, which features pieces by art icons like Salvador Dalí and Keith Haring that have been brought back to life after many years.
After being forgotten for decades, Luna Luna, the first art-themed funfair in history, has made a remarkable comeback. The fair, which was created by Austrian artist André Heller in the 1980s, had rides by well-known artists such as a carousel by Keith Haring, a Ferris wheel by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and a fun dome by Salvador Dalí. Once, while surrounded by performers costumed as nuns and flamingos, visitors investigated Roy Lichtenstein's hall of mirrors and indulged in Gertie Frölich's cookies.
Despite being a success when it debuted in 1987, financial difficulties caused plans for a European tour to fall through. After being disassembled, the rides were placed in 44 boxes and left in storage in Texas.
Decades later, American businessman Michael Goldberg came across the event again via an art blog. Enticed by its past, he contacted Heller, who provided the long-lost location of the fair. Then, through his business DreamCrew, Goldberg brought together a group of investors, including well-known rapper Drake, to purchase and renovate Luna Luna.
The task of rebuilding the fair was extremely difficult and was compared to "like a giant Lego with no instruction kit." The rides and attractions were rebuilt over the course of two years by a group of artists, carnival professionals, and architects.
Luna Luna is now on exhibit at The Shed in Manhattan and reopened in Los Angeles earlier this year. Visitors may tour displays that tell the bizarre story of its birth, absence, and restoration in addition to the carnival attractions.
