George Stephanopoulos, anchor of ABC News' Sunday show This Week, did not bring up the network's deal with Donald Trump. Following Trump's defamation lawsuit against ABC News and Stephanopoulos, the settlement was reached.
ABC News agreed to a deal to avoid a costly court battle, according to a story published by Fox News Digital on Saturday. Stephanopoulos did not address the issue on his broadcast in spite of this. Rather, he concentrated on reports about Trump's cabinet choices, Syria conflicts, and strange drones over New Jersey.
Over the weekend, Stephanopoulos also deleted his account from X.
The complaint was based on remarks Stephanopoulos made in a March 2024 interview with Representative Nancy Mace. Stephanopoulos made repeated assertions during the interview that Trump was "liable for rape" in a legal lawsuit involving E. Jean Carroll. But in that case, the jury found Trump guilty of "sexual abuse," which is defined differently by New York law.
Stephanopoulos defended his statements at the time, stating that he will continue to perform his duties in spite of the lawsuit. He also claimed to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that Trump had sued him for using the word "rape," which he thought was appropriate given the facts of the case.
A $15 million gift to a future presidential foundation and museum established by or for Trump was made by ABC News as part of the settlement. Additionally, the network consented to pay $1 million for Trump's legal bills.
An apology from ABC News and Stephanopoulos may be found in an editor's note in a web article dated March 10, 2024. According to the memo, Stephanopoulos and ABC News "regret" the remarks made in the Mace interview.
A representative for ABC News expressed their satisfaction with the case's resolution and the parties' decision to drop the litigation.
