According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dozens of passengers on a month-long cruise have contracted norovirus.
Princess Cruises' 965-foot cruise ship Coral Princess was traveling from Singapore to Long Beach, California, for a month. There are more than 2,700 passengers and crew members on board the ship.
According to a news release from the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program, 55 passengers have reported having norovirus. According to the CDC, the same sickness affected 15 crew members. The ship stopped in California on November 17 after the first sickness was recorded on November 9.
According to the ship monitoring website VesselFinder, there were no delays in its arrival, and the next morning it set out on a 16-day voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
A highly contagious gastrointestinal disease, norovirus causes painful symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea. In confined areas, like cruise ships, it spreads the greatest. CDC says that the majority of instances of the sickness go away in one to three days. The numbers of sick individuals are based on the number of persons who reported the sickness at any point during the voyage and may not have all been unwell at the same time.
According to the CDC, the Coral Princess crew followed their preventative and response strategy and stepped up cleaning and disinfection efforts in reaction to the outbreak. This is the sixth norovirus epidemic that the agency has received reports of in 2024. Thirteen outbreaks were documented in 2023. Nearly 2% of staff members and over 13% of guests on one Viking Cruises ship reported being sick during a two-week voyage.
