A more sustainable society can be achieved through football, and we are encouraging clubs that compete in our men's club competitions to adopt more socially and environmentally responsible practices.
Every team that competes in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League is required under the UEFA club licensing system to designate a social and environmental sustainability (SES) officer to supervise the application of sustainability policies and initiatives.
Coordinating their club's sustainability strategy—an additional need for competing in our competitions—is the responsibility of SES officers, who serve as a single point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
These standards are a part of our overall goal to make our sport a model for environmental and human rights protection and to contribute to the development of a more sustainable culture throughout Europe. More than 500 clubs are now collaborating with us and one another to use the game's reach to build a brighter future for all, thanks to our strong ties with the European Club Association (ECA).
We provide clubs assistance to help them create a successful sustainability plan that aligns with our own sustainability strategy, Strength Through Unity, which aims to accelerate good change in football and beyond while also allowing them to build their own approach.
In order to stimulate more and more efficient action, sustainability officers are urged to actively interact with the expanding SES community within European football, exchanging best practices and information.
We will keep creating policies, initiatives, and forums to assist the SES community in the meantime, including consistent alignment with the ECA.
Although we are aware that change will not occur immediately, we think that by supporting the sport's long-term viability, we can collectively improve our communities.
