The closing weeks of the U.S. presidential election between Donald Trump and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris have seen a 64% increase in applications to the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.
According to law institution Admission Council data that reporters obtained, the institution has received 633 applications so far, up from 385 at this time last year. A single application system for all American Bar Association-accredited law schools in the United States is maintained by the council.
Harris has been mentioned by candidates as one of the reasons UC Law San Francisco is in great demand this year, according to Law Dean David Faigman on Tuesday. When it was known as the University of California Hastings College of the Law, Harris, a Democrat and current presidential candidate, graduated from the institution in 1989.
The Law School Admission Council tracks the national applicant pool's 33% growth this year, and UC Law San Francisco's increase is over double that amount.
While legal school experts say presidential elections might encourage more people to seek legal careers, they also credit part of the gain to an earlier application process this year.
Throughout her campaign, Harris has focused heavily on her legal background, discussing her tenure as a local prosecutor prior to her election as California's attorney general, U.S. senator, and vice president.
The Republican Trump never went to law school.
An article titled "10 Things You Didn't Know about Kamala Harris' Law School" and a sizable portrait of her are now featured on the homepage of the UC Law San Francisco website. Since the school is a public institution, administrators have stated that it is unable to support any political candidates.
There is history for UC Law San Francisco to see a bump connected to Harris. After Harris was chosen as President Joe Biden's running partner in 2020, the number of applications rose by 33%.
The current 64% rise in applications is the most in the five years the law school has statistics for, according to a spokeswoman.
