Harvey Weinstein probe more sexual assaults

A prosecutor stated on Tuesday that following the overturning of Harvey Weinstein's previous conviction, they plan to seek a new indictment and are investigating "further cases of sexual assault" that the former Hollywood movie mogul is accused of.

In a Manhattan court hearing, prosecutor Nicole Blumberg said that the additional assaults claimed by Weinstein could still be prosecuted as felonies within the statute of limitations. A turning point for the #MeToo movement, which saw hundreds of men in the media, entertainment, and political spheres accused of sexual misconduct by women, came when Weinstein was found guilty in 2020 of the rape charges.

A jury determined that the 72-year-old co-founder of the Miramax film studio had sexually attacked former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and had sexually abused aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. These are not the only eighty-plus women who have accused him of misbehaving sexually. Weinstein was convicted of 23 years in prison, but the New York Court of Appeals discovered in April that the trial's judge, James Burke, erred gravely when he permitted three women to speak about alleged sexual assaults by Weinstein that were unrelated to the criminal accusations against him.

According to the court, testimony regarding his "prior bad acts" infringed upon his right to a fair trial. Weinstein has denied ever engaging in non-consensual relationships. Weinstein's attorney, Arthur Aidala, stated on Tuesday that it was unjust for the prosecution to try to include more victims in the case after the verdict was reversed. Blumberg stated that prosecutors would be prepared to pursue the case in the fall, but a trial date was not specified. Weinstein's next court date is July 19.

In addition, Weinstein received a 16-year term after a different California rape trial. The ruling of the New York court had no bearing on that conviction, and he has not started serving the California sentence.
