Microsoft aims to surpass Apple's M3 processor with its new Copilot Plus PCs.

Microsoft spent a whole day comparing their new hardware to the MacBook Air to demonstrate their confidence in successfully transitioning to Arm chips.

Microsoft compared new Surface tablets with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips to Apple's top laptop at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. After comparing Geekbench and Cinebench, reporters saw an hour of benchmarks and demos that covered apps and compatibility.

Watching benchmark tests is usually not very captivating. The MacBook Air has always been more powerful than PCs with Arm and Intel CPUs. However, on the first test this time, the Surface prevailed. It went on to win subsequent tests as well. Microsoft believes it is now in a position to dominate the laptop market because of the outcomes of these tests.

Microsoft has been collaborating with top laptop partners for the past two years to develop a lineup of Windows laptops with Arm processors. These laptops will be released this summer. Copilot Plus PCs, also known as Copilot Plus, are designed to lay the groundwork for an AI-driven future and introduce a new generation of powerful and energy-efficient Windows laptops.

After Apple started using its own CPUs with the M1 release in 2020, Windows laptops' performance and battery life have fallen behind MacBooks by a lot. Microsoft is surprisingly confident about this, considering its past difficulties with Windows on Arm over the last ten years.

Microsoft initially tried to transition Windows to Arm CPUs with the Surface RT in 2012. However, there were major issues with app compatibility and the device's performance was unsatisfactory. In 2019, the Surface Pro X had a greatly improved debut thanks to enhanced emulation and underlying Windows modifications. Although it couldn't compete with Apple's M1 at the time, it set the stage for the future. The collaboration with Qualcomm seemed to be starting to pay off.
