Construction helped limit the decrease in German industrial production in March, according to data released by the federal statistics office on Wednesday.
Industrial production decreased by 0.4% in comparison to February, which was less than the 0.6% drop forecasted by analysts in a Reuters poll. Industrial production in Germany decreased in March after two months of growth, highlighting the continued struggles of the German economy, said Franziska Palmas, senior Europe economist at Capital Economics.
Palmas anticipates a little increase in industrial output during the year, although it will still be below historical norms. The statistics office reported a 1.0% production increase between January and March compared to the previous three months in a less volatile comparison. In February, the production growth was 1.7%, lower than the previous increase of 2.1% before the data correction.
Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro at ING, stated that optimism has returned and the cyclical downswing has ended. But he went on. There is still a long way to go before there is a significant rebound, especially in the business sector. Manufacturing is still experiencing low demand. In March, German industrial orders decreased by 0.4% when adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, according to statistics released on Monday.
On Wednesday, a separate survey by the Ifo Institute showed that 39.5% of manufacturing companies had a lack of orders in April, up from 36.9% in January. German economic expansion is being impeded by a shortage of orders, according to Ifo's head of surveys, Klaus Wohlrabe. Ralph Solveen, senior economist at Commerzbank, anticipates lower output in the upcoming months due to the weakening of orders. Nonetheless, Solveen stated that a rebound is anticipated in the second half of the year.
Manufacturing production, excluding energy and construction, decreased by 0.4% during the month. According to Destatis data, construction production increased by 1.0% while energy production decreased by 4.2% in March.
