The collaborative effort between ITS EdTech and CFE underscores a commitment to supporting faculty members during the transition to Canvas.

Carolina faculty members are gearing up for the transition to teaching all courses using Canvas after the conclusion of the spring 2024 semester. This transition, part of the University's multiyear shift from Sakai to Canvas, has provided an unprecedented opportunity for collaboration between ITS Educational Technologies (EdTech) and the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE).

Bob Henshaw, serving as the ITS liaison to CFE, described the transition as unique due to the infrequency of changes in learning management systems. EdTech initially conducted virtual training sessions, including recorded Zoom sessions and office hours, to assist faculty in familiarizing themselves with Canvas. However, in May 2023, ITS and CFE joined forces to launch the Canvas Snapshot series, primarily in an in-person format.

Marissa Stewart, interim associate director for teaching and learning at CFE, leads the in-person training sessions, offering insights into Canvas and its pedagogical advantages. She also provides guidance on utilizing specific functions and features of the platform. EdTech specialists Kate Moss and Marla Sullivan are present during these sessions to address technical queries promptly. Moss explained that if a technical question arises that could benefit the entire group, the response is broadcasted to all attendees.

The collaborative effort between ITS EdTech and CFE underscores a commitment to supporting faculty members during the transition to Canvas, ultimately enhancing the teaching and learning experience at Carolina.
