Apple has acquired Canadian AI startup DarwinAI to strengthen its technological arsenal for generative AI in 2024, following the closure of another autonomous car startup.
Investor interest in artificial intelligence is rising, another autonomous vehicle startup closes, and Zoox expands its testing of autonomous vehicles. Apple Inc. has acquired the Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI in an effort to expand its technological capabilities ahead of a significant push into generative AI in 2024. Following Apple's acquisition of DarwinAI earlier this year, a number of DarwinAI staff members joined Apple's artificial intelligence division, according to people with knowledge of the matter who requested anonymity because the terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
In addition to developing AI technology for visually inspecting components during production, DarwinAI offers services to a range of businesses. Nevertheless, reducing artificial intelligence systems' size and speed is one of its main technologies. This work may be beneficial to Apple, which is concentrating on integrating AI into devices rather than just the cloud. Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped start the company, became a director in Apple's AI group as part of the arrangement.
Despite having acquired more AI firms than most in the past 10 years, Apple has fallen behind its rivals in the generative AI sector. OpenAI's ChatGPT was utterly unprepared when it was first released in 2022, and with its expanded capabilities, competitors like Google and Microsoft Corp. have assumed a more prominent role.
