CNN Philippines will cease operations

CNN Philippines will cease operations this week, marking the end of nearly a decade of providing English-language news to one of Asia's most vibrant democracies.

CNN Philippines said on Monday that it would be closing this week, bringing an end to over ten years of providing English-language news to one of the most dynamic democracies in Asia.

The channel's growing financial deficits will force it to cease operations on Wednesday. Since starting to broadcast in March 2015, the parent business of the broadcaster, Nine Media Corp., has lost 5 billion pesos, or $88.5 million, local media reported.

Nine Media recorded financial losses of 239.7 million pesos in 2022 and 231.4 million pesos in 2021, according to local news source GMA News Online.

To show CNN-related programming, the broadcaster signed a brand and content license agreement with Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific in October 2014. The original plan was to expire in December of current year, but it was extended in 2019.

CNN Philippines' collapse coincides with the spread of disinformation in the media globally. According to Katie Harbath, Director of Global Politics and Government Outreach at Facebook, in 2022, the nation was "patient zero" in the worldwide fight against misinformation.

The nation's main English-language news network, CNN Philippines, is available on pay and cable television. Additionally, in an effort to reach a wider audience throughout the archipelago, the broadcaster ventured into broadcasting news in the local languages of Kapampangan and Cebuano.
