The decision to allow all political advertisements in the United States could help X expand its revenue.
X, the social media corporation formerly known as Twitter, announced Tuesday that it would now allow political advertising from politicians and political parties in the United States, as well as grow its safety and elections team in advance of the 2024 presidential election.
Twitter had prohibited all political advertisements globally since 2019 before being acquired by billionaire Elon Musk in October. In January, Twitter removed the prohibition and began allowing "cause-based ads" in the United States to promote awareness of problems such as voter registration, and announced plans to broaden the sorts of political ads allowed on the network.
The decision to allow all political advertisements in the United States could help X expand its revenue at a time when many sponsors have abandoned or curtailed their spending on the platform for fear of appearing next to improper content. The business stated that it would establish a global advertising transparency center that would allow users to know what political advertisements were being promoted on X, and that it would continue to restrict political advertisements that spread false information or seek to undermine public faith in an election.
