20 Best Workplaces of the Year 2023
Business Fortune

The CEO of S&techs, Nobuo Shigemitsu, established the business in Hong Kong in 2000. In addition, he started the American main contractor and construction manager StructureTone. Mike Kavanagh, the current COO of S&techs, was StructureTone's representative at the time of its establishment. The goal of both S&techs and StructureTone was to provide a professional and high-quality construction service to meet the demands of local businesses and multinational enterprises in Hong Kong, with a particular emphasis on interior fit-out and refurbishing.
S&techs increased its footprint after realizing there was a need in the market for design and construction companies with an emphasis on manufacturing and industrial facilities, particularly in southern China. The first S&techs office outside of Hong Kong opened its doors in Shenzhen in 2003. With five locations in Mainland China—Shenzhen, Suzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Foshan—as well as offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and Taiwan, S&techs has expanded throughout the years.
Nobuo Shigemitsu was contacted by Business Fortune for an interview; this is his response.
Highlights of the Interview
What are the primary areas of concentration for S&techs as a full-service main contractor and construction manager?
We concentrate on a variety of industries, such as retail, food & beverage, luxury residential, data centers, banking & finance, corporate services, hotel & hospitality, luxury residential, education, and industrial manufacturing (which includes R&D and logistics centers).
Regarding the contractual arrangements we offer, typical main contracting, design and build, construction management at risk, and construction management consultancy are our primary areas of focus.
Would you please introduce your services to us? What distinguishing qualities do they have?
Comprehensive design, engineering, and pre-construction services are among the many services that S&techs offers. These include full design and engineering solutions, budgeting and estimating, value engineering, procurement, scheduling and programming, surveys and due diligence, and buildability solutions. We also work with local authorities to obtain permits and statutory approvals.
We offer on-site management and supervision, cost control, quality control, health and safety monitoring, LEED and BREAM, and the start of sustainability campaigns concerning installations and waste removal, among other services, during the construction period.
After-care services, operation and maintenance manuals, and as-built drawings are the main priorities during the post-construction phase.
Could you share with us one or two success stories detailing the difficulties your clients encountered and how S&techs assisted them in resolving those difficulties?
Meeting strict budgets in the present cost-conscious market is the main issue that clients face. S&techs has conducted extensive value engineering studies as a proactive response. These exercises seek to reduce costs while maintaining alignment with the client's and the architect's or designer's aesthetic vision. Delivering value engineering services that led to an over 25% cost savings for a sizable office interior project for a worldwide customer was a recent success story. The project would not have proceeded without this crucial cost decrease.
Describe the S&techs team for us. What benefit do they offer the business?
S&techs provides a full-service team that includes designers, managers, and supervisors of projects and sites; managers and engineers of technical services; managers and officers of health and safety; managers of quality control; and managers of cost and procurement. This group of knowledgeable specialists and technical experts is committed to overseeing every facet of projects and making sure they are finished on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. For clients that have large plans or well-planned opening dates, this is crucial information.
What new projects are S&techs working on right now?
In addition to aggressively pursuing new projects, S&techs places a high priority on sustainability in all aspects of its operations, including project design and on-site implementation. In addition, the business founded REMOC Inc., a sister company that focuses primarily on innovation, especially in the field of smart site technology. With an eye on the future, S&techs plans to open its tenth facility in Kuala Lumpur in 2024.
Before we conclude, is there anything more you would like to say?
In May of next year, S&techs will celebrate its 25th anniversary! The business extends its sincere gratitude to its main clients for entrusting it with their initiatives throughout the years in the APAC area. Recurring business accounts make up over 70% of S&techs' annual clientele, highlighting the long-lasting connections and contentment that have been developed over time.
