An Ultraviolet (UV) LED, or ultraviolet light-emitting diode, stands as a technological marvel, emitting electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays. Operating on the principle of a 'p-n junction,' UV LEDs are solid-state devices that generate light as an electrical current flows from the positive (p-type or anode) to the negative (n-type or cathode) side of the circuit. Each UV LED is meticulously crafted to produce a specific, narrow range of UV wavelengths.
UV curing, a photopolymerization process, utilizes UV energy to transform a liquid into a solid state. When exposed to UV energy, the photo-initiators within the material produce free radicals, initiating a cross-linking reaction with binders (monomers and oligomers). This reaction results in the curing or solidification of inks, coatings, or adhesives. UV formulations incorporate additives like stabilizers, wetting agents, adhesion promoters, defoamers, and pigments to impart desired characteristics or color to the cured material.
