Some companies build technology to impress the world, while others build it to improve it. Cohere belongs to the second category. It was created with a belief that artificial intelligence should serve a purpose far greater than automation or efficiency, it should make people better at what they do. Every model, every platform, and every breakthrough at Cohere is built around one idea: that the true measure of AI’s success is how deeply it enhances human capability.
From its origins as a small Toronto startup to becoming one of the most visionary forces in enterprise AI, Cohere has remained dedicated to one mission: to make technology that helps people think smarter, work faster, and achieve more.
Every solution Cohere designs empowers organizations to unlock potential hidden within their data, processes, and teams. It helps them innovate faster, scale smarter, and make decisions that drive real progress. AI, for Cohere, is not an end, it’s a bridge to a more capable, creative, and connected world.
From a Bold Dream to a Global Force
Founded in Toronto in 2019, Cohere began with a vision that intelligence, when scaled responsibly, could serve humanity in extraordinary ways. What started as a small team with a big idea quickly grew into a global company that enterprises around the world trust.
Between 2021 and 2024, Cohere secured nearly one billion dollars across four major funding rounds. This momentum helped the company expand worldwide, hire some of the brightest minds in machine learning, and continue developing world-class AI models that are transforming how enterprises operate.
In 2022, Cohere launched Cohere Labs, an open science community focused on solving complex AI challenges. Today, the initiative has over 4,500 members and has produced more than 100 research papers, each contributing to the broader goal of responsible, transparent AI innovation.
Then in 2025, Cohere unveiled North, an enterprise AI platform designed to redefine workplace productivity. North combines agentic intelligence with advanced retrieval systems, allowing teams to automate routine tasks, enhance workflows, and uncover insights grounded in their own data.
Leveraging Industry-Leading Products
Cohere’s strength lies in transforming advanced AI into something usable, understandable, and immediately impactful. It brings the promise of intelligence out of research labs and places it directly into the hands of people who can use it to make a difference.
North: North represents Cohere’s vision for AI that truly works for people. It’s a powerful, enterprise-grade platform designed for immediate impact. Businesses can create custom AI agents that automate complex workflows, generate documents, and surface key insights, all from their own data, securely and accurately.
Seamlessly integrating with existing tools like Google Drive, Salesforce, and GitHub, North helps teams focus on progress instead of process. It brings automation, analysis, and collaboration together in one intelligent workspace, helping businesses achieve more with less effort and greater confidence.
Compass: Cohere’s Compass was built to solve that problem. This intelligent enterprise search system allows companies to access precise, reliable information across their fragmented data systems.
Compass goes beyond keyword search, it understands context, meaning, and intent. It delivers answers grounded in verified enterprise data, even across different languages or formats. For organizations that depend on accurate insights, Compass is more than a tool; it’s an intelligent guide through complexity.
Command: Cohere’s Command models have set a new benchmark in generative AI. These high-performance language models make communication fluid and intuitive, helping businesses streamline workflows, improve decision-making, and communicate globally. Supporting 23 languages, Command allows seamless knowledge sharing across teams and borders.
It’s conversational AI that doesn’t just respond, it understands. By making interactions with machines feel as natural as talking to a colleague, Cohere brings humanity back into technology-driven communication.
Building AI That Works With You
Cohere’s philosophy is simple yet powerful: AI should serve people, not the other way around. Every solution is designed with security, scalability, and flexibility in mind. Whether it’s automating software development tasks, enhancing customer support, or improving product recommendations, Cohere’s technology adapts to human needs, not the other way around.
It’s an approach that puts trust and transparency first, ensuring that every organization using Cohere’s AI can do so with confidence and control. By building systems grounded in real data and real ethics, Cohere ensures that progress remains responsible, equitable, and sustainable.
The Road Ahead
Cohere’s success comes not from working in isolation but from collaboration, with clients, research partners, and the wider AI community. The company’s open science philosophy invites dialogue, diversity of thought, and shared progress. This collaborative mindset is what keeps Cohere at the forefront of enterprise AI. It continues to push boundaries, not for competition, but for contribution, to create technology that benefits everyone, not just a few.
Cohere’s journey is far from over. With every innovation, it moves closer to a world where AI is seamlessly woven into daily life, empowering people to work smarter and live better. The company’s vision remains clear: to make artificial intelligence accessible, purposeful, and deeply human. Because at its heart, Cohere is building a future where technology understands, supports, and strengthens the human spirit.
