Billdr Is Bringing Sales, Projects, and Finances Together for Contractors

Construction projects are worth millions yet still, the businesses and the contractors managing the projects face challenges while doing so. Billdr wants to change that. It has evolved from a home renovation marketplace into an artificial intelligence-operating system for general contractors and home builders. The firm currently focuses less on connecting homeowners with contractors and more on providing a single place for all processes that take place at the construction company.

Founded in 2020, Billdr is offering services in Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago that helped homeowners plan their renovation and find general contractors. However, by 2023, the firm noticed a problem that lay deeper, where contractors needed more sophisticated tools to manage the business itself. The realization created Billdr's operating system. According to the company, nearly 1,000 general contractors and homebuilders utilize Billdr, sending over 100,000 quotes per year and representing over $2 billion worth of projects.

One Connected System from Lead to Payment

Connectivity is at the core of what Billdr does. Leads can go from the sales pipeline to being estimates, then contracts, and ultimately project management and scheduling, expenses, and invoicing without having the same data entered again across multiple systems.

Why is that important for contractors? Construction often doesn’t happen within the confines of a single department. Changes in scope can impact a quote, schedule, purchase order, budget, and finally invoice. Billdr brings those pieces together so the information remains attached to the project.

The platform supports residential general contractors, commercial general contractors, home builders and specialty contractors, particularly small and growing businesses. Billdr says it is designed for teams ranging from one to 30 full-time employees and can also scale to businesses with 30 to 100 employees.

Smarter Estimating with Bruno

Estimating is one of the areas where Billdr is putting AI directly into the daily workflow. Its AI estimator, Bruno, can work from plans, project descriptions and scopes of work. Rather than relying only on generic industry averages, Bruno uses a contractor's own price book, cost codes and historical project data to help produce estimates. The goal is to turn hours of repetitive estimating work into a faster first draft that the contractor can review and refine.

The wider estimating platform also allows contractors to organize labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, markups, allowances and optional items. Estimates can then be turned into professional proposals for clients.

That practical connection between AI and existing company data is important. Construction costs vary by location, supplier, trade and business. Billdr's approach is to make the AI increasingly specific to the contractor using it rather than treating every construction company as if it works from the same numbers.

Project Management

Projects are able to organize crews, schedule assignments, control daily tasks, enter timesheets and log daily activity on the field side. Plans, permits, contracts, pictures, specifications and other documents can be kept in the project as opposed to keeping them in various email threads and folders.

Change orders are yet another essential element of the solution. Contractors can make and monitor them, while clients can view, approve, digitally sign and pay for them. The approved change orders will be linked to the financial history of the project.

Communication with the client is also integrated in the process flow. Billdr has construction report generation functionality that covers such issues as progress, future work, budgets, invoices, payments and approved change orders. That provides clients with a better understanding without constant questions from the contractors' side.

Financial Control beyond the Jobsite

Construction profitability can disappear quietly. A few cost overruns, missed expenses or delayed invoices can change the economics of a project before anyone notices.

Billdr's financial tools are designed to make those numbers visible while the project is still underway. Contractors can manage invoices, online payments, expenses, purchase orders, bills and budgets while tracking revenue, commitments and profitability at the project level.

Its integration with QuickBooks Online is designed to connect operational and accounting information, including invoices, expenses, payments and purchase orders. That reduces the need for teams to enter the same information twice.

An AI Workforce, Not Just an AI Feature

Perhaps the most interesting part of Billdr's direction is that AI is becoming a layer across the entire platform.

Bruno focuses on estimating. Bob acts as an AI copilot across projects, finances, documents and operations, helping users find information, generate reports and identify work that needs attention. Billie is designed as an AI receptionist that can interact with leads through websites, calls and text while helping qualify inquiries and book calls.

The company recently announced a $3.2 million funding round led by White Star Capital, with participation from One Way Ventures, Desjardins Capital, asterX and Formentera Capital. Billdr says the funding will accelerate its development of an AI-native operating system for construction.

Looking Toward the Future

Billdr is heading towards a vision where the AI knows the history of the company, its pricing, its project activities and financial information, and helps in decision making on daily basis. The future vision is one such construction firm where the flow of information happens smoothly from the office desk to the field site, with AI doing all the repetitive coordination job.

In that case, the contractors can save themselves a lot of time on looking for information. And Billdr’s bigger picture goal is to transform construction management from a collection of disconnected administrative tasks into one intelligent, connected operating system.
