Renee Nicole Good, 37, was killed during an ICE enforcement action in south Minneapolis, prompting an official probe and widespread outrage over use of force.
During a federal enforcement operation in south Minneapolis, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, on Wednesday, according to authorities and her family.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, identified her daughter in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, describing her as “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known” and “an amazing human being.” Good lived in the Twin Cities with her partner and leaves behind a young child. Her family said she was “probably terrified” in the moments leading up to the shooting and was not involved in any confrontations with law enforcement.
A federal immigration operation was at the center of the deadly incident. Online video claims to show ICE agents close to Good's vehicle; authorities claim she attempted to drive in their direction, a claim that some eyewitnesses have disputed. Good was fatally wounded by one agent's repeated gunfire.
Thousands of people have gathered close to the location to honor good and protest the use of force, sparking protests and tension in the city. Local leaders such as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, denounced the government reaction and demanded accountability.
According to Department of Homeland Security officials, Good's vehicle constituted a threat, thus the agent acted in self defense. The shooting is currently the subject of an official inquiry. Lawmakers and community members have reacted sharply to Good's death, highlighting serious worries about federal legal enforcement strategies in the face of increased immigration enforcement across the country.
