India's Indus Treaty Suspension Sparks Pakistan Tensions

Pakistan strongly objected on Thursday to India's plan to revoke the 1960 Indus Water Treaty in retaliation for the terrorist assault that killed tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan claimed that the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty will cut off 240 million Pakistanis' lifeline during a National Security Council meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to decide how to react to India's actions. Strong reciprocal actions will be taken in all areas in response to any danger to Pakistan's sovereignty and the safety of its citizens. The Pakistan Prime Minister's Office stated in a statement that India should stop playing the reflexive blame game and using events like Pahalgam to achieve its limited political goal in a cynical, staged, and planned manner.

In a swift reaction to India's actions the day before, Islamabad likewise shuttered the Wagah border crossing and restricted Indian planes' access to the airspace. Additionally, all commercial channels with India—including those via foreign countries—were stopped.

Additionally, Pakistan stopped issuing SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) permits to Indian nationals, with the exception of Sikh pilgrims. According to the PMO, Indian people who were already in Pakistan under SVES were told to leave within 48 hours, with the exception of Sikh pilgrims.

India, meanwhile, declared that it will stop issuing visas to citizens of Pakistan as of April 27. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, all currently valid visas that India has granted to citizens of Pakistan are canceled as of April 27. It said that Pakistani nationals' medical visas will only be good till April 29.
