Frontman Damon Albarn comments, "One opera and one new Gorillaz album feels like enough for 2025!"

The English virtual band Gorillaz will release a new album in 2025, not more than two years after their last album was released. In an early interview with French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, vocalist Damon Albarn revealed the next LP. The prolific musician also discussed the release of his new opera, The Magic Flute II: La Malédiction, and his plans for the remainder of the year.

Jamie Hewlett, Albarn's Gorillaz partner, allegedly verified the information. An Instagram account devoted to the band posted a direct message from the musician saying, "Yes, the new album is coming out this year." Albarn told a French podcast that the record will be finished in "2 months," according to the same post.

It should not be surprising that Albarn is currently receiving a lot of French publicity, especially since his new opera debuted on Thursday, March 27, at the Théâtre du Lido in Paris and continued there until Sunday, March 30. The Magic Flute II: La Malédiction, the follow-up to Mozart's 1791 opera The Magic Flute, is a very ambitious production.

Since the success of the most recent Gorillaz album, Albarn has been busy. In July 2023, Blur released The Ballad of Darren, their first album in eight years. It became their seventh straight record to top the U.K. charts, peaking at No. 94 on the Billboard 200 (their lowest-charting release since 1995) and No. 5 on the Top Alternative Albums chart.

Gorillaz and Blur, on the other hand, have not performed live in a while. The former has not done so since the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California in 2023, and the latter has not done so since the 2024 edition of the same event.
