Trump Withdraws Elise Stefanik’s UN Nomination to Protect GOP

Donald Trump pulls Rep. Elise Stefanik’s UN ambassador nomination, citing the need to secure the GOP’s narrow House majority.

The candidacy of Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York to be the US ambassador to the UN has been withdrawn by President Donald Trump. In a social media post announcing his choice, Trump said that Stefanik's retention in the House of Representatives was crucial to preserving Republicans' slender majority.

The president said that Stefanik would return to the House leadership team, calling her one of his closest allies. She had relinquished her post as chairman of the House Republican Conference, the third most senior member, in order to prepare for the UN role.

The president's initial cabinet choice was Stefanik, a former Trump opponent who is now a MAGA favorite. The vote on her nomination was postponed because her support was required in the House to approve measures supported by Republicans, even though she was predicted to easily achieve Senate confirmation.

Following two Florida special election contests on April 1, her confirmation was scheduled to go to a vote. One of the legislators who have left the two Republican-safe seats unoccupied is former Representative Mike Waltz, who is currently the national security advisor.

However, considering the president's agenda and the necessity to preserve the slim 218-213 Republican majority in the House, talks were held at the White House on Thursday over Stefanik's continued membership in Congress.

Stefanik will continue to serve her staunchly Republican upstate New York district, having just finished a farewell tour in preparation for the UN post. According to the White House, the president has not yet appointed the next ambassador to the UN.
