Trump Drops Executive Order Against Paul Weiss After $40M Pledge

After the Paul Weiss law firm changed its DEI policies and promised $40 million in free legal services, Trump revoked an executive order that targeted the firm.

An executive order that targeted a well-known Democratic law firm was revoked by Donald Trump after the firm agreed to donate $40 million in free legal services to help his administration achieve its objectives.

Law companies whose attorneys have rendered legal services that Trump disapproves of have been singled out by the White House. He threatened last week to revoke any government contracts held by Paul Weiss and to suspend the active security credentials of its lawyers. However, after Trump spoke with Brad Karp, the chair of the legal firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, on the White House directive, the president abruptly changed his mind.

Mark Pomerantz, a former employee of the company who headed the Manhattan district attorney's office's inquiry into Trump's finances before to his election as president, was specifically singled out in Trump's order for his efforts. At one point, Pomerantz compared the president to a mob leader.

The White House reported that the company pledged to address various pro bono issues representing diverse political perspectives to counter Trump's order. The firm also agreed to avoid using diversity, equity, and inclusion factors in hiring and promotion decisions and committed $40 million in free legal services to support Trump administration policies on antisemitism and veteran assistance.

The White House said that the company also admitted the misconduct of Pomerantz, the partner in the probe into Trump's payments of hush money to an adult film star. It was unclear if Karp knew about such assertion.

Karp expressed their satisfaction that the President has decided to revoke the Executive Order pertaining to Paul Weiss in a White House statement. A positive and active connection with the President and his Administration is something they look forward to.

The company recently compromised with the president to appease him. To resolve Trump's litigation, Meta and ABC compensated his prospective presidential library. Several financial and tech companies have also reversed their DEI initiatives in line with Trump's policy goals.
