CISA Issues New Security Rules for Routers, Firewalls & Servers

A new set of rules has been released by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to strengthen firewalls, routers, servers that are visible to the internet, and other edge devices against cyberattacks.

Leading international cybersecurity groups have endorsed this joint guideline, which attempts to address vulnerabilities in hardware that serves as the foundation for operational networks and vital infrastructure throughout the globe.

Because of their critical role in network security and connectivity, edge devices such as firewalls, routers, Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and operational technology (OT) systems—are often the focus of cyberattacks. Through sound procedures, practical mitigations, and suggestions for product design, the new standards aim to assist businesses in securing these devices.

CISA offers recommendations on how to integrate the required security logging and remote data collecting features into network devices in collaboration with the UK's National Cyber Security Centre. These capabilities, which are best if pre-configured, let firms identify and look into cyber breaches more efficiently, allowing them to react to threats more quickly.

Manufacturers seeking useful advice on mitigating vulnerabilities during development are referred to CISA's Secure by Design page. To guarantee long-term security resilience, critical infrastructure operators are also encouraged to consult "Secure by Demand" considerations while purchasing digital products.
