In order to concentrate on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy's Department of Government Efficiency initiative, Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., declared she would not be serving on any GOP committees next year.
When Ramaswamy was directed to count her in by Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. According to Spartz's post on X, she will continue to be a registered Republican but will not serve on committees or take part in caucuses until she believes the Republicans are in control of Congress.
She went on to say that she is not required to work in circuses. As required by the American people, she would want to devote more of her time to assisting @DOGE and @RepThomasMassie in preserving their Republic.
Her article came after another in which she asserted that Republicans must implement the $2 trillion in drastic budget cuts that Musk has called for, amounts that he acknowledged would certainly cause "hardship" for Americans. She also issued a statement in which she discussed assisting President Trump, his aides, and DOGE in fulfilling their commitments via reconciliation.
It is unclear how Spartz's choice would impact the GOP's already narrow House majority in the upcoming term and if her unwillingness to cooperate will cause House Speaker Mike Johnson any more trouble.
In any case, this appears to be mostly beneficial for Musk and Ramaswamy's group's perceived credibility. Furthermore, there's no reason to believe that the GOP-led Congress will be any less circuslike than the Department of Government Efficiency. Spartz was voted by her supporters to serve in the Republican caucus, despite the fact that it is a circus.
Her choice, however, supports my hypothesis that Trump and his Washington friends are working to weaken Congress's reputation and reduce its power so that the executives he appoints to lead can make all of the crucial choices.
Musk and Ramaswamy's assertion that Trump may utilize impoundment to withhold monies approved by Congress for expenditures is indicative of this. Additionally, conservatives are pushing for Trump to avoid the Senate's need to confirm his Cabinet choices by using recess appointments. Spartz's declaration, in my opinion, is just one more attempt by MAGA backers to transfer authority from Congress to Trump and his close circle in the executive branch.
