‘Shogun’ made Emmy history in 2024

The show, set in feudal Japan, garnered an impressive 18 Emmy awards, setting a record for a single television season. Among its accolades were acting honors for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

Justin Marks accepted the Emmys 2024 winners for Best Drama Series award, highlighting the show's unique journey. He noted the unlikely success of an expensive Japanese period piece centered on a poetry contest. Marks emphasized that "Shogun" explores the concept of translation, focusing on cultural discoveries rather than losses.

With a sense of humor, he addressed some of the production's difficulties, such as holding meetings about safety in two languages while emphasizing the value of honoring Japanese customs, such as avoiding wearing utility boots on Tatami mats.

Hiroyuki Sanada, invited to speak, addressed the audience in Japanese. He expressed gratitude to the production team, noting how their shared passion and dreams transcended oceans and borders.

Sanada also won Best Lead Actor in the Drama Series winner 2024, becoming only the second Asian actor to receive this honor. He thanked FX, Hulu, and Disney for their trust and described "Shogun" as a respectful blend of Eastern and Western cultures, promoting unity.

Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian recipient of the Lead Actress in the Drama Series winner 2024. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the "Shogun" team and credited her mother as the inspiration for her character, Mariko.
