At a political pep rally on Wednesday night, vice presidential candidate Tim Walz rallied fellow Democrats and declared that he and presidential running mate Kamala Harris would defeat Republican Donald Trump in November's U.S. election.
Despite being relatively unknown in the United States just fifteen days ago, the governor of Minnesota confessed that he had never given a speech of such significance.
The audience erupted in "Coach, Coach, Coach!" chants in response.
On the third night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Walz, accompanied by a long list of political heavyweights and popular performers, took his straightforward speech style and small-town values to the national arena.
Walz, sixty, agreed to take the No. 2 position as his party's nominee.
He expressed his opinion that America ought to be a place where children are fed, housing and healthcare are fundamental human rights, and the government stays out of people's bedrooms in response to Republican attacks on abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
He talked about protecting the liberties that the 78-year-old Trump, who is running for president of the United States on his third major party ticket, is allegedly attacking. A second Trump White House, according to Walz, would benefit only the most radical and wealthy people.
Standing next to his mother and sister in the audience, 17-year-old Gus Walz leaped to his feet while his father was speaking, pointing to the stage as if to say, "That's my dad," and crying.
Harris, 59, will speak to the group on Thursday, the last night.
