According to a report by Bloomberg News on Tuesday, Apple Inc. has lost roughly 100 positions in its digital services division, with the team in charge of the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore suffering the most cutbacks.
The article, which cited sources familiar with the subject, stated that several engineering roles and other services teams, such as the one that operates Apple News, are among the ones being laid off.
Regarding the Bloomberg News article, Apple chose not to respond.
It was not immediately clear how many people worked for Apple in its services division. According to its most current annual report, the company employed about 161,000 full-time equivalent employees as of September 30, 2023.
Due to evolving objectives, notably those related to artificial intelligence, Apple has started rearranging teams.
This restructuring may signify a shift in the company's strategic focus as it responds to the fast-paced advancements in AI technology. As one of the leading tech companies, Apple is likely seeking to realign its resources to stay ahead in the competitive landscape of AI development.
Media reports state that it had put off plans to design and manufacture its own smartwatch displays earlier this year and had stopped development on its upcoming high-end Vision headset.
China, Apple's third-largest market, has been problematic for the company since last year; in the most recent quarter, sales there decreased by 6.5%.
