Walmart has committed to support the construction of almost 1GW of solar projects across the US
Earlier in the year, Walmart unveiled its ambition to facilitate the delivery of 10 GW of new clean energy generation projects by 2030, alongside a strategic vision to support community renewable energy initiatives and pursue traditional corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs). Vishal Kapadia, the company's senior VP for energy transformation, recently confirmed Walmart's commitment to nearly 1 GW of solar projects since the January announcement. Collaborating with Pivot Energy and Reactivate, Walmart is set to develop 26 new community solar projects across six U.S. states, collectively reaching 70 MW of capacity and potentially serving up to 13,000 households, primarily in low-to-moderate-income communities.
In related developments, Cargill, a multinational food corporation based in the U.S., has announced five new renewable energy purchase agreements, collectively adding 300 MW of wind and solar capacity this year. This marks a significant expansion of the company's existing offsite renewable energy portfolio, currently standing at 416 MW. One of the contracts involves sourcing energy from the Windpark Hanze onshore wind farm in the Netherlands for ten years, providing over 90% of Cargill's grid-based electricity demand upon completion. Further agreements include procuring electricity from a 130 MW wind farm in Texas, USA, in collaboration with Blue Cloud Wind Energy, and a 55 MW solar farm in southern Italy through a partnership with Galileo Green Energy.
