Progressive Democrats and Republicans criticized President Joe Biden for considering executive action to tighten asylum restrictions following reports of potential executive action.
Republicans and several progressive Democrats criticized President Joe Biden on Thursday in response to rumors that he is thinking of using unilateral action to tighten asylum regulations.
According to an administration official who spoke with the media, one possible solution would be to forbid migrants from requesting asylum if they enter the country illegally between ports of entry. But the official emphasized that they have yet to decide what action, if any, to take.
These things are considered as Biden continues to encounter political obstacles over immigration in the 2024 campaign. For months, he has been under pressure from House Republicans to take unilateral action to reduce the number of interactions with migrants at the southwest border, which peaked in December.
Previously, the White House dismissed ideas that he might take such action, claiming that only legislation passed by Congress could practically resolve the issue. Last month, in response to a question concerning his executive authority, Biden told reporters, "I've done all I can do."
House Speaker Mike Johnson brushed off Biden's possible shift in direction as "election year gimmicks." Johnson has spearheaded the push for Biden to exercise presidential authority while keeping bipartisan immigration legislation out of the Senate. In response to questions regarding Biden's earlier remarks that he had run out of alternatives on the border, an administration official claimed it would be reckless to ignore other options when the immigration accord reached a standstill in Congress.
