Business Fortune

The supermarket business has a significant impact on our communities. People are fed by this industry, which also helps put food on tables for get-togethers with loved ones. We all have the same need to be fed and nourished, regardless of who we are. And it's likely that you stepped into Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket, and Winn-Dixie to acquire your groceries if you live in or have visited the Southeastern region of the United States. Southeastern Grocers Inc. (S.E.G.), the parent company of all these endearing brands, prioritizes its staff and customers in all business decisions.
SEG's cultural change has advanced significantly. The company's designation as a Great Place to Work and its inclusion in Newsweek's list of the Most Loved Workplaces are testaments to this. Anthony Hucker, President and CEO of Southeastern Grocers, stated, "We're in the people business; we just happen to sell groceries." "We will continue to foster our culture of being Reliable, Empathetic, Accountable Leaders (R.E.A.L.) and our strong sense of trust and transparency between associates and leadership."
We had a conversation with Mr. Anthony Hucker to find out more about how the business puts its employees and clients at the forefront while always enhancing its services. He also gave a quick overview of Southeastern Grocers' recently introduced W.D.'s Wine concept for a stand-alone liquor store. Continue reading to see the interview snippets.
Describe your system for managing inventories.
In order to manage inventory upstream in a way that is most effective and efficient for the various supply chains that serve our stores, SEG depends on its network of supplier partners. In order to guarantee that our product offers are precisely suited to our customers' demands and to continuously enhance our availability on the shelf, we have made large expenditures.
Furthermore, we are dedicated to promoting an inclusive atmosphere where diversity is honored and cultivating a culture of belonging. We daily incorporate these values into the products we place on the shelves in each of our locations. For this reason, we keep forging closer ties with existing minority and local suppliers and establishing connections with fresh, varied companies whose goods correspond to the interests and inclinations of our consumers, employees, and the communities we serve.
How is your supply chain managed? And describe its adaptability for us.
Instead of being a producer or a wholesaler, SEG depends on its solid supplier relationships. Because our network of supplier partners are professionals in their own supply chains, they support our stores with exceptional flexibility and agility, giving our consumers a reliable shopping experience.
Buying and storing a large amount of merchandise for sale at any given moment is a necessary part of running a supermarket. That implies additional money invested in inventory and associated storage expenses. How are expenses managed?
Our stores' inventory is entirely owned by us, and we've made technological investments to make sure our offerings are customized to the tastes of our clients.
How can you establish your own brand as a supermarket?
Since our associates and customers are the center of our attention, we at SEG are constantly striving to enhance our offers and deliver the best possible products at competitive prices. We promise far reduced everyday costs on over 8,000 products from our award-winning SE Grocers, Prestige, Essentials, and Naturally Better product lines. According to a recent internal consumer survey, 99% of our clients think our private label brand is on par with or superior to the national brand. We launched a money-back guarantee campaign pushing our clients to try it, love it, or get their money back in order to spotlight our private label and boost usage.
We're honored to carry on our winning tradition with over 80 accolades won so far this year, including three USA Wine Ratings Best in Show honors, five World Dairy Expo gold medals, and twenty-five Store Brands Editors' Picks awards. Our private label products provide excellent quality at competitive pricing to our customers and associates.
We also have a strong sense of responsibility for the communities in which our associates reside and work. Our people-first culture has earned us recognition from Newsweek Magazine, which named us one of the 50 American companies that braved the pandemic and included us in their 2021 list of the Most Loved Workplaces. We rank 48th out of the top 100 companies for employee satisfaction and happiness at work. We have continued the tradition of giving throughout 2021. In 2020, SEG and the SEG Gives Foundation kindly donated more than $8.25 million to the communities it serves to support neighbors in need. We also partnered with more than 4,700 local organizations, hosted more than 30 mobile food pantries, and provided more than 10 million meals to help fight hunger.
Are there any new services that are prepared for release?
We recently introduced WDs Wine, Beer & Liquor, a completely new idea in stand-alone liquor stores, giving our patrons a distinctive new place to go for premium liquor, craft beer, and excellent wine. As we expand throughout the state of Florida, the new WDs idea is our most recent chance to provide our neighbors in North Florida with outstanding service.
WDs offers a wide range of wines, including our award-winning own brands. It also has tasting stations, beer caves with a variety of local, domestic, and worldwide craft beers, and a large liquor collection. These stores will provide a wide range of beverages in addition to high-quality food items like over 70 types of cheese, real Italian meats, and a variety of dips and spreads. With our exclusive product offerings and premium savings, we created WDs to be our customers' one-stop shop for all of their at-home entertainment requirements. We continue to be the grocer that our associates, clients, and communities can always rely on as we take these next stages in our growth path.
In addition, we have kept growing our digital offerings and eCommerce alliances in an effort to improve our consumers' lives by providing them with easy and delightful buying experiences.
What lies ahead for your business and its clientele? Are interesting developments imminent?
For the past few years, our company has been undergoing a radical change. The three stages of this journey are: Fit for Purpose, Fit for Growth, and Correcting the Business. We are currently at the third stage of being Fit for Growth after making incredible progress. So far on our journey, we've seen steady growth and steadily improving financial performance.
We are on target to renew all 100 of our stores by the end of 2023 in our current Fit for Growth phase, and we have set ourselves up to keep adding new locations to our fleet. We keep improving our reward program and having individualized conversations with our clients by looking at things from their eyes. Our attempts to personalize are resulting in a distinctive, customized purchasing experience made just for each of our clients.
